The Resistance in the Pursuit
Most meaningful things in life ask something of us.
The motivation in the new routine wears off, or making time for it gets hard.
The doubt gets loud.
The business feels uncertain.
The meditation feels unnecessary.
The relationship asks for another honest conversation.
It’s tempting to take that resistance as a sign that something isn’t working.
But what if it’s the opposite?
In yoga philosophy, there’s a concept called tapas. It’s often translated as discipline, but I’ve come to understand it more as heat—the kind that transforms.
Not the heat of burnout.
Not the heat of forcing.
Not the kind that leaves you depleted.
The steady warmth created when you keep returning to what matters.
Meaningful, important, transformational things in life tend to contain friction.
You can crave a strong, energetic body yet have mornings when you don’t want to move, desire a calmer mind and still struggle to sit still, want deeper relationships, more creativity, better health, or a life that feels fully your own—and still encounter resistance along the way.
That resistance isn’t proof you’re on the wrong path. It’s often proof that you’re participating. It’s happening - you’re walking toward those things you want.
The culture around wellness can make it seem like the answer is always more optimization, another hack. But transformation rarely comes from forcing perfection. It comes from devotion.
From rolling out the mat again.
From cooking one nourishing meal.
From doing it now instead of waiting until next Monday.
From choosing presence over pressure.
From letting the small things accumulate until they quietly become your life.
